Optical Coherence Tomography
Use it when you need high-resolution cross-sectional information in transparent or semi-transparent layered materials.
Technology overview
How it works
Low-coherence interferometry resolves optical reflections by depth, building cross-sectional and volumetric images without physically sectioning the sample.
Where it adds value
Optical glass; films and coatings; transparent polymers; display stacks; pharmaceutical coating thickness; microfluidic and other small layered structures.
Combine it with
Pair with machine vision for surface localisation and with precision motion / automation for repeatable scanning. Add spectroscopy when chemical composition is also required.
Practical note
OCT is strongest where the material is optically accessible; penetration reduces in strongly absorbing or scattering materials.
Engineering principle: start with the measurement question, then select the minimum sensing stack required.
